How To: Stop Lag & Save Battery on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 by Hibernating Background Apps

How To: Stop Lag & Save Battery on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 by Hibernating Background Apps
If your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has been feeling sluggish lately, or you've noticed the battery not lasting as long as usual, the problem could be that you have too many applications running in the background.Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook, among other apps, like to run persistently, refreshing all of the time in order to update you with new notifications. This constant use of resources creates lag on your Android device, as it needs to repeatedly work and strain, even when you're not specifically using the apps.
How You Can Take Control Over Your AppsToday, we're going to make sure your device doesn't work more than it needs to. We can do this using Greenify from Android dev Oasis Feng, which puts power and memory hungry apps into hibernation whenever you're not specifically using them. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Make Sure You're RootedIn order for Greenify to work on your Galaxy Note 2, you'll need to be rooted. If you're not already rooted, check out our complete softModder guide on doing so with ODIN. Also, make sure to back up your device when installing any apps that require root.
Step 2: Install GreenifyDownload and install Greenify from Google Play. If for some reason you can't get it there, you can download the APK directly, but you'll need to make sure Unknown sources is checked in your Security settings before doing so.

Step 3: Putting Apps in HibernationOnce you've downloaded and installed Greenify, click on the + sign to check out the apps running on your device that consume the most memory. There will be four different categories into which the apps are separated:Running in background Scheduled running (since last startup) May slow down the device when... Recently running From there, you can select which apps you want to go into hibernation when you're not actively using them, and press the check mark sign to "greenify" them.
What You Shouldn't Use Greenify ForSince the background functionality of the apps selected will become out of service during hibernation, you should not use Greenify on apps in which you expect (or need) any of the following:Persistent background services Broadcast receivers Alarms Widget update Push messages Once an app is in hibernation, all of the features in the list above will be out of service unless you have the app open on the screen. Having a longer lasting battery is definitely not worth being late for work.
Want More Features? If you want to try out some additional experimental features like the ability to Greenify system apps and allow GCM push notifications during hibernation, you can get the "donation version" for $2.99.

How To: View Your Saved Apple News Stories & History in iOS 12 on Your iPhone

How To: View Your Saved Apple News Stories & History in iOS 12 on Your iPhone

One of the best features in the Apple News app is the ability to save stories for later. If you see an interesting or important article but don't have time to read it right away, there's a good chance you'll never find it again unless you save it. Ever since News' birth in iOS 9, accessing these bookmarked stories was as easy as going to the "Saved" tab, but that's no longer the case in iOS 12.For some odd reason, Apple trimmed the menu bar in Apple News from five tabs to just three. "For You" was turned into "Today," the "Spotlight" tab remains, and the "Following," "Search," and "Saved" tabs were condensed into one over-cluttered "Channels" tab (previously "Browse" in the betas). The old "Saved" tab actually had double duty, showcasing not just your bookmarked posts but your reading history too, so that's harder to find now also.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know About for iPhone The News app in iOS 11 (left) vs. iOS 12 (right) goes from five tabs to three. Now, in iOS 12, to see your saved news posts or find something in your history, you have to open up the "Browse" tab. After scrolling down past the search bar, sites and categories you follow, and Siri suggestions, you can finally tap "Saved Stories" or "History" to view your stockpiled articles or items read, respectively. When reviewing your saved list or history, all the same tools appear as before. In the saved list, swipe right on a story to like/dislike it or report it, swipe left on it to love/unlove (which is the same as like/dislike), share, or unsave it. In your history, right swiping on a post will be the same as in saved stories, but left swiping will let you share, save, or delete it. You can also "Clear" your history like before. While Apple claims its new News design makes it "easier to navigate your news feed" and "jump to your favorite topics and channels," it makes it much harder to review the things you stashed away or wanted to check out again.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Need to KnowFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Get Chat Head Bubbles for Text Messages on Your Nexus 5

How To: Get Chat Head Bubbles for Text Messages on Your Nexus 5

A while back, Facebook released a killer feature called "Chat Heads" to its Facebook Messenger app. Messages from users would "pop up" in small bubbles that floated on the screen that could be seen, accessed, and moved around from within most apps.Users applauded the innovation and devs drooled over the opportunity to incorporate the feature in their applications, which brought us apps like Floating Notifications (now called Floatifications). However, the downfall of that app is that tapping a notification takes you directly its corresponding app—even text messages. If you want a more efficient way to deal with floating SMS notifications, Ninja SMS by Ninja Apps is the way to go, and I'm going to show you why. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
A paid version, which unlocks certain features, is available for $1.50.

Setting Up Ninja SMS on Your Nexus 5Ninja works as well, if not better, than the myriad of third-party SMS apps, only you don't have to use it as your default texting app if you don't want to. The chat heads feature works regardless of your main SMS app.But if you choose to make this bad boy your daily driver, the interface is smooth and clean and generally there isn't anything that could ruffle any feathers. There are only two tabs up top: left for messages and the right for contacts. All of your contacts will be checked, indicating that they will activate a chat head pop up notification. Simply uncheck a contact to disable their chat head.By tapping the dial icon in the lower right corner, you can adjust settings such as fonts, color themes, and the behavior of chat heads. Some settings, like the shape of the chat heads, will run you into an in-app purchase. So if you want the chat head of your beholden to show up as a heart, you fork over a few bucks. Or you could just leave it be.

Using Your New SMS Chat HeadsAs long as you have Ninja installed, chat heads will pop up for any SMS message you receive, appearing on top of most apps. Tap the bubble to expand a window in which you can read the message and reply. If you're done with the bubble, tap the 'X' in the upper right corner to get ride of it. There are also icons to expand the window or collapse it back to a bubble. If you don't want to receive duel notifications in your drop-down alerts menu, you'll have to either deactivate notifications from your previous SMS app or make Ninja your default messenger. The default toggle is in the main settings menu under the slider icon previously discussed.Chat heads are a neat feature, but there's no reason for Facebook Messenger to have all the fun. Try out Ninja to get in on the action!

How To: Force Your iPhone to Switch Cell Towers for a Stronger Signal

How To: Force Your iPhone to Switch Cell Towers for a Stronger Signal
Having a dropped call can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you look down and see that your iPhone has full reception. While there's any number of issues that can cause this, one common and often overlooked issue is your iPhone failing to switch cell towers as appropriately needed. When you're not switched to the appropriate tower, it means there's a problem with the communication between your smartphone and cellular network. Either your iPhone tries to hold its connection to a cell tower that's well outside the optimal range or the new cell tower is already overloaded with other connected devices.
How Cell Phones Switch TowersCell phones work with networks to determine the best tower to connect to based on range, signal strength, and the frequency being used. When a phone is connected to a cellular network, it continually checks the signal strength of nearby towers and communicates that information to the network. In theory, when a phone's connection to a cell tower drops below signal strength of a nearby one, the network should switch the phone to the new tower.Don't Miss: Easily View Your Current Cellular Data Usage on Your iPhone Practically, however, this doesn't always occur as smoothly as it should and common fixes, such as cycling Airplane Mode, don't always work. While using the "Reset Network Settings" option will always work, it's a drastic step that will also erase any saved Wi-Fi login credentials. Fortunately, there's another simple way to force your iPhone to switch towers.

Step 1: Install OpenSignalOpenSignal is a network performance monitoring app that not only tells you the speed of your connection but also shows you what tower you're currently connected to. You can search for "OpenSignal" in the iOS App Store directly or use the link below to jump right to it. Install just like any other app.App Store Link: OpenSignal - Speed Test & Maps (free)

Step 2: Configure & Check Your Current TowerOnce you have OpenSignal installed and open, you'll need to give it access to your location in the notification prompt. OpenSignal uses your position to show you nearby cell towers. The app will also ask if you want to contribute signal data. OpenSignal uses this information to rate the carriers and provide customers with input on what carriers offer the best coverage in any given region; This is entirely voluntary, but if you do opt in, any information collected will be strictly anonymous. Another Way to Get a Stronger Signal: Get a SureCall Flare Signal Booster Kit for iPhones (Amazon | Best Buy | Walmart)After that, you'll see a screen with an arrow pointing to the tower your iPhone is currently connected to. You can also tap the arrow to pull up a map displaying all the nearby towers operated by your carrier. You'll want to recheck this after forcing a switch to confirm it was successful. Don't Miss: Network-Unlock Your iPhone to Use with Any GSM Carrier on iOS 11

Step 3: Force Your iPhone to Switch to a Better TowerTo manually force your iPhone to switch cell towers, open the Settings app, then tap "Cellular." Next, select "Cellular Data Options," then tap "Enable LTE." The setting will likely be set to "Voice & Data." Cycle it to "Off," wait 30 seconds, and then cycle it back to the previous setting, either "Voice & Data" or "Data Only." Once your iPhone's LTE antenna reconnects, it will search out the antenna with the strongest signal and connect to it, likely a different one that you were initially having issues with.

Step 4: Verify the Tower Change with OpenSignalReopen OpenSignal to see if your iPhone is connected to a different tower. If the force switch was successful, the arrow on the main screen should be pointing to a different tower. If it appears you're still connected to the same one, it likely means there isn't a better tower nearby. Other towers may be farther away, have a weaker signal, might not be using compatible frequencies, or may already be overloaded.Either way, you'll have another method to deal with pesky cell connection issues without taking any drastic measures. If you're still having issues, you may want to look into signal boosters like the SureCall Flare, available from Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and other retailers.Don't Miss: How to See the Actual Signal Strength on Your iPhone in iOS 11Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Use Your Android's NFC Reader to Turn Your Computer On

NFC, or near-field communications, is a hardware feature that has been built into most Android phones for the last four years. It's essentially a low-power data connection that can be used to initiate a quick command by bringing your device within range of a compatible receiver, be it tap-and-pay with Google Wallet, a file transfer via Android Beam, or a Tasker profile triggered by a specific NFC tag. That last example has quite a few practical implementations. NFC tags can be purchased for less than a dollar each, and when combined with an automation app, can trigger a series of events on your phone and even in the real world. All of this occurs by simply placing your phone within range of the NFC-embedded sticker. With that in mind, the folks over at Rice Or Noodles came up with a rather innovative way to put your phone's NFC reader to good use. After a bit of one-time setup, you'll be able to power on your Windows PC by simply laying your phone down on your desk—I'll outline the process in more detail below.
RequirementsAny NFC-enabled Android device A Windows PC One NFC tag (Available on Amazon and other online retailers)

Step 1: Prepare Your PCFirst and foremost, you'll need to make sure your PC is set to allow for "Wake on LAN" commands. Open your Control Panel, then click "View network status and tasks" to begin. From the next menu, click "Change adapter settings" in the left pane. After that, right-click your primary internet connection, then select "Properties." From here, click the "Configure" button near the top of the windows that appears next. After that, head to the Advanced tab, then make sure the "Wake on magic packet" option is enabled.

Step 2: Write Down Your IP & MAC AddressesWith your computer now set up properly, you'll need to jot down a few numbers in preparation for the setup on your Android device. On your keyboard, hold down the Windows button, then press "R" to open the Run dialog. From here, type "cmd" and click "OK." In the command prompt window, type the following command, then hit enter:ipconfig /all Next, scroll through the list and find the "Ethernet Adapter" section. Write the values for Physical Address, IPV4 Address, and Subnet Mask on a piece of paper.

Step 3: Install Tasker, Trigger, & WoL Wake on Lan WanNext, there are a few apps you'll need to install on your Android device to get this going. First is Tasker, which is a paid app that runs for $2.99. If you'd rather try before you buy, you can use the 7-day trial version from this link, but make sure that "Unknown Sources" is enabled in your phone's settings under "Security" before you launch the installer file. After that, install Trigger, which will be used to read your NFC tag. Finally, install WoL Wake On Lan Wan to execute the command that will power your PC on.

Step 4: Configure WoL Wake on Lan WanFirst, you'll need to configure the app that will actually be waking your PC. Open WoL, then tap "Add New." From here, type "Home" as the name, then fill out the "MAC" and "IP or Domain" fields with the information you copied in Step 2. After that, tick the box next to "Send as Broadcast," then enter your Subnet Mask information. When you're done, tap "Save."

Step 5: Create a Tasker TaskNext, open Tasker and tap the three-dot menu button, then select "Preferences." From here, head to the Misc tab, then tick the box next to "Allow External Access." Back at Tasker's main menu, head to the Task tab, then tap the "+" button at the bottom of the screen. Name this task "Wake" and then press the checkmark icon. From here, tap the "+" button at the bottom of the screen again, then select "Plugin" and "WoL Wake On Lan Wan" from the two menus that follow. After that, tap the pencil-shaped edit button at the top of the screen, then select your "Home" WoL Wake On Lan Wan profile. When you're done with that, go ahead and back all the way out of Tasker.

Step 6: Associate This Task with an NFC Tag Using TriggerAll that's left to do at this point is to tie your work to an NFC tag. Open the Trigger app, then tap the "+" button at the top of the screen two times. From here, select "NFC," then tap "Next" and "Done." After that, tap "Next," then hit the "+" button at the top of the screen. From here, select "Tasker Task," then hit "Next." On the small popup window, tap the magnifying glass icon, then select the "Wake" task you created in Step 5 and hit "Add to Task." Again, hit "Next" and "Done," then grab your NFC tag. From here, you'll be prompted to write this task to your NFC tag. Place your phone within range of the tag to do so, then tap "Done" when the process has completed.
Step 7: Waking Your PC & TroubleshootingWith everything set up, you should now be able to turn your PC on by simply setting your phone down on top of the NFC tag. Note that most phones will have to be unlocked with the display on before the task will trigger. If you're experiencing any issues with the tasks you've created, the first troubleshooting step you should take is to run through your computer's BIOS settings. For most models, BIOS can be accessed by pressing the Delete, F2, F8, or F10 buttons on your keyboard during a reboot. From here, make sure that any "Wake on LAN" options are enabled, then save your changes and try again. In the end, your phone and a simple sticker on your desk now serve as your PC's power button. I have mine stuck to a Qi charger so that I can top off my battery while I'm using my computer. What's your setup like? News: 8 Reasons the BlackBerry KEY2 Is Already the Best Phone for Privacy & Security
We need to take our privacy and security much more seriously. Whether it's malware-infected apps or the mishandling of our data by companies like Facebook, there are threats all around us in this digital world. Fortunately, some smartphones are simply designed to protect us better.Once again, a BlackBerry device topped our list of the best phones for privacy and security. BlackBerry, which has always been known for their protection, brought many of the security enhancements from their old OS (BB10) to Android when they made the switch. The result is the most secure Android smartphone on the market, and the best option for privacy-conscious individuals.Don't Miss: BlackBerry Introduces the KEY2 — a Worthy Successor to the Iconic KEYone
1. Hardware Root of Trust & Secure BootProtection for the BlackBerry KEY2 starts during manufacturing when each device's processor is injected with cryptographic keys. These keys are unique to every individual handset off the line, and are vital during the Secure Boot Process. When you turn on your phone, even before you are presented with your lock screen, each component of the hardware and software is checked for any tampering. If any component fails the test, the KEY2 will not boot. This makes it infinitely harder for hackers or law enforcement to bypass BlackBerry's other security measures.
2. Rollback ProtectionOne strategy used by thieves and hackers is to downgrade your phone to an older version of Android in an effort to exploit older vulnerabilities not addressed in the previous version of Android. However, the KEY2 protects against this by preventing any older version of the OS from being installed — in other words, "Rollback Protection."

3. Kernel HardeningAt the heart of every Android operating system version is the Linux kernel. The kernel is an essential component of Android, making it a high target for hackers. While Android does a great job patching any vulnerabilities in the kernel, BlackBerry takes it further.BlackBerry altered the kernel of the KEY2 to remove any unnecessary functionality. BlackBerry also reviewed previous exploits that plagued other Android devices and patches the KEY2 before it leaves the factory. And, while most Android devices receive monthly security patches sent out by Gooogle, the KEY2 will receive additional patches whenever BlackBerry catches a vulnerability that endangers the integrity of the kernel. Image by BlackBerry Mobile/YouTube
4. UnrootableAs of the time of this writing, no Android-powered BlackBerry smartphone has ever been rooted. It's BlackBerry's goal to keep it this way. While rooting does open the door for additional features, it leaves your device in a compromised state. Without the capability of rooting, the KEY2 can avoid exploits which depend on root to compromise the security of your device.

5. DTEK & BlackBerry Integrity DetectionDTEK is the KEY2's central hub for all things security related. On the main page, you'll find a gauge which visual displays how secure your device is, along with a list of any factors preventing maximum security. Image by GSMArena Official/YouTube DTEK automatically monitors the operating system and apps, looking for any signs of potential threats to your defenses. DTEK also leverages the BlackBerry Integrity Detection (BID) to alert you of threats in real-time.BID is a system of triggers placed all around your device that monitors any changes to major components. Once this occurs, DTEK will warn you and provide options you can take to stop any further compromise. Additionally, you can set up your own triggers for sensors, such as an alert anytime an app asks to use the camera in the background.
6. Full-Disk EncryptionUnlike other Android Phones running Android 7.0 Nougat or higher, the KEY2 encrypts it hard drive using full-disk encryption rather than file-based encryption. With full-disk encryption, to access any file on the phone's storage, you need to know the device password. The password is used to create a key, which the KEY2 stores in the BlackBerry Secure Compound, a trusted execution environment (TEE).Furthermore, their full-disk encryption is compliant with the US government's computer security standard, FIPS 140-2. Not only does them allow to fulfill the requirements needed to keep one of their biggest customers, but it also provides you access to security that is secure enough for the US government.
7. Privacy ShadeSeeing how we often use our phones in public, BlackBerry included an app which protects us from nosey neighbors. Using either the Quick Setting toggle or the default three finger swipe down gesture, you can launch Privacy Shade to darken your display except for one small area, allowing you to continue to view your screen safely. Privacy Shade lets you control how dark you make the screen as well as the size and shape of the visible area.

8. LockerBlackBerry understands that sometimes we need to lend our phones to others. Whether it's a friend needing to make a call or a significant other who doesn't trust us, sometimes our unlocked phone will be in the hands of others. To protect our data in those situations, BlackBerry included Locker.Locker is a secure folder that requires fingerprint or password authentication to access. This folder can store both apps and files that won't appear in the app drawer or file manager. These apps and files are exempted from cloud backups as well.Locker also includes a browser, Firefox Focus, to view the web privately without worrying about someone checking your browsing history. Additionally, Locker is also integrated into the camera. When taking a photo, a light tap of the space bar will automatically save the image in the Locker instead of the public gallery. Image by GSMArena Official/YouTube With the KEY2, BlackBerry took a strategic approach as to how they will protect your privacy and keep your phone secure. The enhancements and tools added improve the Android operating system powering it and allow the KEY2 to separate itself from the competition. We all need to take privacy and security more seriously. Often, we don't pay attention until something happens, and only then do we realize the severity of the impact. With the KEY2, BlackBerry does the bulk of the work, allowing the more essential components to run automatically. What are your thoughts on the KEY2? Let us know in the comment section below.Don't Miss: The 4 Best Phones That Preserve Your Privacy & Keep You SecureFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Save Your iPhone's SHSH2 Blobs So You Can Downgrade iOS for Future Jailbreak Methods

How To: Save Your iPhone's SHSH2 Blobs So You Can Downgrade iOS for Future Jailbreak Methods
When a new jailbreak method comes out, Apple is quick to patch the vulnerability it exploits by issuing a new iOS update. If you were to accept such an update, you'd no longer be able to jailbreak your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch unless you could roll back your firmware to a version that could be jailbroken. But Apple even takes things a step further and stops signing older iOS firmware versions, which makes downgrading next to impossible. This is where your SHSH2 blobs come into play.If you save your current SHSH2 blobs, you'll always be able to roll back your firmware to the iOS version your phone is currently running — even if Apple stops signing it. This means that if a jailbreak method for your current iOS version is made available after you've updated to a future iOS version, you'll be able to do a custom restore with iTunes to downgrade your firmware to the version that works with the jailbreak method. In short, it's sort of like future-proofing jailbreak.Saving your SHSH2 blobs used to be a complicated process, but that has thankfully changed. You can now preserve your current iOS firmware in just a few easy steps, which makes it easy to restore your device if you ever make a mistake during a jailbreak attempt. It also simplifies the process of downgrading to a lower version in the event that a jailbreak method is released after you've updated.Don't Miss: All the Cool New Features in iOS 10.3 for iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch
RequirementsMac or Windows PC with iTunes installed Lightning USB Cable
Understanding SHSH2 BlobsIn a nutshell, SHSH and SHSH2 blobs refer to digital signatures that Apple employs to make specific IPSW files, better known as iOS software, for each of the device they make. This method ensures that only trusted software is installed on their iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches.Whenever a new iOS software is released, Apple stops signing the signatures on previous versions, thus giving users no choice but to update to the latest iOS version. So using saved SHSH2 blobs to restore using a custom firmware is akin to forging a signature on iTunes in order for it to verify the older software and allow for its installation into your device.

Step 1: Connect to Your Computer & Open iTunesTo get started, connect your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to your computer with your Lighting cable, then open iTunes if it didn't pop up automatically. Make sure you're on the device's information page, then look for the Settings section located on the left-hand side and select "Summary."

Step 2: Find Your ECID & Model IdentifierIn order to save your device's SHSH2 blobs, you'll need to find its ECID and Model Identifier numbers. To do so, simply click on the serial number located right under "Capacity" in your device's general information tab within iTunes. Each time you click on the serial number, it will show a different device identifier number, so keep clicking until this menu shows your device's ECID. Once you've found it, copy the ECID number into your clipboard as you'll need it later on. After you've sorted your ECID out, you'll need to find your device's Model Identifier. Simply follow the same steps you did when finding the ECID by clicking on the serial number in iTunes until it shows up. You don't have to copy the info, though you'll need to remember it later on and make sure it matches up with the selections you make later on.

Step 3: Convert Your ECID into HexadecimalThe tool we'll be using to extract the SHSH2 blobs works best when your ECID is a hexadecimal value. So if your ECID only contains numbers rather than a combination of letters and numbers, you'll need to convert it to hexadecimal before you proceed. To do that, simply head to this link, then paste in your ECID into the Decimal Value field, then click "Convert." From there, copy the number in the Hexidecimal Value field and save it somewhere safe, because this is the number you'll be entering into the SHSH2 extraction tool next.

Step 4: Input ECID & Model IdentifierNow that you have both the ECID and Model Identifier on hand, you're almost ready to save your SHSH2 blobs. To do that, we'll be using an open-source utility created by Redditor 1Conan, so head to the following link to access it:Access the open-source SHSH2 Blobs Saver utility From there, paste your ECID into the box under the same name, then select your specific device type and Model Identifier from the two drop-down menus provided under "Identifier." Finally, be sure to check off the CAPTCHA box to prove you're not a robot, then click "Submit."

Step 5: Save Your SHSH2 BlobsAt this point, the site will automatically save your SHSH2 blobs, so give it a few minutes to do its job. Once it's finished, you'll be greeted with a link that lets you download the SHSH2 blobs, so go ahead and click it to do so. We'd also recommend bookmarking this link since you can use it to download your files again if you ever lose them in the future. In the event that you forget your link, however, you can always go back to the site and re-enter your ECID in the "Lost your link?" box, then click "Submit" to retrieve your SHSH2 download link again. With your SHSH2 blobs now saved, you'll be prepared if and when that long-awaited jailbreak for the latest iOS version finally arrives. Once it comes to downgrade, you can use these SHSH2 blobs with the FutureRestore/Prometheus tool to get the iOS version you want back on your device. How To: Keep Your Android's Screen On All the Time Without Killing Your Battery

How To: Keep Your Android's Screen On All the Time Without Killing Your Battery
Samsung's latest flagship devices, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, as well as the Note7, have a useful feature called "Always On Display." With this one enabled, the clock and some other information will continue to be shown on the screen, even when you lock your phone or turn your screen off.We covered an app called Glance Plus that gives users a decent chunk of this functionality. But that app didn't offer a true "Always On" display, because it would eventually turn off after a while for the sake of battery life.So we kept on the lookout for an app that emulates this functionality perfectly, and we finally found one from developer Tomer Rosenfeld. Unlike Glance Plus, this one will stay on indefinitely (without killing your battery), plus it offers plenty of customization options, and it lets you continue using your fingerprint scanner as you normally would.
Note About AMOLED DisplaysThis app is not recommended for use on devices with traditional LCD screens. These types of displays require that their entire backlight be lit up at all times while displaying any content, so an always-on display would be a huge battery drain on a device with an LCD screen. Therefore, we can only recommend this app if your device uses an AMOLED display, which is a newer technology where each pixel on the screen emits its own light. With this type of screen, only the white portions of the always-on display will use any power, so the battery drain is significantly lowered.

Step 1: Install Always On AMOLEDThe app that brings a true "Always On" feature to devices with AMOLED displays is fittingly called Always On AMOLED. To begin, head to the Google Play Store and get it installed.Install Always On AMOLED for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Grant PermissionsWhen you first launch the app, you'll be greeted by a set-up guide. These screens will prompt you to enable a pair of additional permissions, so tap the "Allow Now" button, then enable the switch on the following screen. When you're done with the first one, head back to the app, then repeat this same process for the second permission.

Step 3: Adjust OptionsWith the permissions enabled, Always On AMOLED will be ready to go, though you may want to adjust a few of its options before you try it out.To make sure the feature is on and not being cleared from memory, keep the two options in the General section enabled. Aside from that, you should enable "Move the widget automatically" to avoid any screen burn-in. Then, if you'd like, you can have the always-on display show notification icons by enabling the "Notifications" option.Scrolling down further, you can enable "Double tap to dismiss," "Swipe up to dismiss," or "Volume keys to dismiss," which offer additional ways to dismiss the always-on display and return to your lock screen, though the power button can do this by default. Then, finally, you can adjust the brightness of the always-on clock with the slider towards the bottom of this menu.

Step 4: Try Your New Always-On DisplayWith everything set up to your liking, you're good to go. The next time you turn your screen off, the always-on display feature will show up a second or two later. The interface is mostly black with a white clock, which is very AMOLED-friendly. Then, if you enabled the "Notifications" option, you'll even see icons beneath the clock when you receive a new message. How To: Disable the 'Unlock iPhone to Use Accessories' Notification in iOS 11.4.1 & Higher

How To: Disable the 'Unlock iPhone to Use Accessories' Notification in iOS 11.4.1 & Higher

If you're on iOS 11.4.1 or iOS 12 and go more than an hour without unlocking your iPhone, an "Unlock iPhone to Use Accessories" message will appear whenever you connect your iPhone to a computer or other device that tries to use the Lightning cable's data lines. This is to protect you, but it can be annoying if you have no reason to believe that law enforcement or criminals will have access to your iPhone. The feature is an extension of one that Apple initially added in the 11.3 beta but didn't make its way to the public until iOS 11.4, where an iPhone locked for seven days would require to be unlocked before a computer or other accessory can access its data. This includes trusted devices, which otherwise needed no priming other than the initial process of trusting it once you first connect the two.Everything You Need to Disable on Your iPhone for Maximum Security Apple added the feature to prevent organizations such as the FBI and local law enforcement, as well as hackers, from using brute-force tools like GrayKey and Cellebrite from accessing your data without your permission. If you're not worried about any future run-ins with the law or are a corporate employee at risk of being hacked, it's likely this extra security in iOS 11.4.1 and iOS 12 will just be irritating. If you haven't unlocked your iPhone in over an hour, whenever you plug your iPhone into your computer to charge it, your iPhone will vibrate and bring up the "Unlock iPhone to Use Accessories." While this prevents any data-stealing efforts, it also disables charging capabilities. You can plug your iPhone into a wall outlet and charge no problem, but connecting to a computer will require that you unlock your iPhone, if presented with the message, before it can charge.Obviously, if you plug it in real quick and don't notice the message, you may be left with a dead iPhone whenever you go to grab it next. To prevent this from happening, open up Settings, tap "Touch ID & Passcode" or "Face ID & Passcode," then enter in your passcode. From there, scroll down until you see a toggle that says "USB Accessories" and switch it on.Don't Miss: Here's How Apple's Stopping Police from Breaking into iPhones With this new security feature disabled in iOS 11.4.1 and iOS 12, your iPhone will likely revert to iOS 11.4's security settings, where it will need to be unlocked to transfer data or charge the device using a data accessory if it hasn't been unlocked in seven days.Either way you choose to go with this setting, you should know that there are reports that the new protections by Apple are still capable of being brute-forced by hacking tools. So whether you have it set for one hour or seven days, there's still a chance someone can bypass your iPhone's security and gain access to your data.Don't Miss: Keep Data-Thieving USB Accessories from Connecting to Your iPhone in iOS 11.4.1 & HigherFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Create a Contextual Smart Folder on Your Home Screen That Always Knows What Apps You Want

How To: Create a Contextual Smart Folder on Your Home Screen That Always Knows What Apps You Want
An app from the development team at ts-apps has the potential to make your Android device smarter than it's ever been. At first glance, you'd think it's just an ordinary home screen folder—but depending on what you're doing at a given time, the folder can show a completely different set of apps. It's a contextually-aware folder, so you can set it to show a different set of apps when you do things like connect a pair of headphones, join a specific Wi-Fi network, or make a phone call. This means that no matter what you're doing, you'll always have quick access to the most pertinent apps right on your home screen.Don't Miss: Tasker for Beginners: 5 Simple Profiles to Get You Started with Android Automation

Step 1: Install Contextual App FolderTo get this one going, start by installing the app, which is called Contextual App Folder.Install Contextual App Folder for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Set Up Your Default FolderWhen you first launch the app, you'll be greeted by a set-up guide. Once you make it to the main menu, though, you'll be ready to start creating contextually-aware folders.First, you should set up the "Default" folder, so tap the corresponding entry on the main screen. From here, you'll see a list of all your installed apps, so select the apps you'd like to see in your smart folder when no special conditions are active. Next, you can reorder the apps in this folder by tapping the three-dot menu button next to its label on the main screen, then selecting "Order actions." From there, just drag and drop the apps to put them in your preferred order.

Step 3: Create Your Own Contextual FoldersNow that you've got the default folder set up, it's time to configure some contextual folders, which is the main feature here. So from the app's main menu, tap the + button in the bottom-right corner, then select a "Trigger Type" from the list. Options here include location, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and even the time of day, and each of these triggers can have their own set of apps in the smart folder. There's also an in-app purchase available for $1.99 if you'd like to combine two scenarios. Some triggers will ask you to specify further conditions—for instance, selecting "Wi-Fi" will prompt you to choose a specific Wi-Fi network. Once you've done that, you'll be able to choose a different set of apps that will be visible in your smart folder when this trigger event occurs. When you're done here, make sure to tap the check mark to finalize your work. After that, you can repeat this same process for other triggers, which can each have their own different set of apps in the smart folder if you choose.

Step 4: Theme the FolderOnce you've set up your trigger events, tap the palette icon in the top-right corner to theme your smart folder. The next menu will allow you to customize the look and feel of the folder to make it match your existing home screen folders, which is a nice touch.

Step 5: Add the Folder to Your Home ScreenFrom here, all that's left to do is to add the folder to your home screen. To do that, long-press any empty space on your home screen, then choose "Widgets" from the menu. After that, long-press the "C.A.F." widget, then drag it and drop it into place on your home screen.

Step 6: Always Have the Right Apps for Any SituationFrom now on, your home screen folder will react to trigger events on its own. When one of your trigger conditions is met, the folder will instantly change names, and the apps it contains will change as well. Then, when none of your conditions are met, the folder will go back to its default state automatically, including all of the apps you selected in Step 2. (1) Headphones connected, "Headphones" folder active. (2) Apps inside of "Headphones" folder. (3) No active conditions, so the folder goes back to "Default." Ultimately, this means that your smart folder will always show the most relevant apps for almost any situation, and it's completely customizable. What apps have you added for some of your trigger conditions? Let us know in the comment section below.Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

Then, remove the lights, and replace the existing resistors with higher-powered ones, and the lights with infrared LEDs. When the press tries to film you while you're wearing these at night, the cameras will see bright, menacing lights where your face should be. This how-to is presented as a joke, but it would be hilarious to see celebrities employing this tactic. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
