How To: The Flat-Out Easiest Way to Create a Nandroid Backup on Android
If you have a custom recovery installed on your Android device, the first thing you should have done as soon as you finished installing it was to create a Nandroid backup. But if you didn't, I'm not here to judge—I'm here to show you a much easier way.
What Exactly Is a Nandroid Anyway? The term Nandroid is actually a portmanteau word of the type of memory your phone uses and the software that said memory stores. Flash memory uses NAND (or "Not And") gates to store its data, and the data it's storing in this case is the Android system files. To create a Nandroid backup means to save a snapshot of the state of these NAND gates in order to preserve a copy of your existing Android setup. If your device ever falls victim to a "soft brick" or endless bootloops, you can simply restore this backup, and everything will revert to exactly the way it was before.
How to Create a Nandroid More EasilyThe process of creating a Nandroid backup is a bit of a pain. You have to boot into recovery, then wait until the backup finishes before you can use your phone again. It's for this reason that developer Thomas Otero created Online Nandroid Backup, an app that allows you to make Nandroid backups from within Android.Instead of putting your phone out of commission for a good 30 minutes with the traditional method, you can now tap a button, then go about using your device while a Nandroid backup is created in the background. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
PrerequisitesRooted Nexus 5 (or any other rooted Android device) Custom recovery installed

Step 1: Install Online Nandroid BackupThe app that makes all of this possible is available for free on Google Play. Search Online Nandroid Backup to get it installed, or head to this link to skip directly to the install page.

Step 2: Configure Your Backup SettingsWhen you first launch Online Nandroid Backup, the app will ask for Superuser privileges, so Grant it those.

Choose a Backup NameThen, you can go about the process of configuring the various backup options. First up is Backup Name. Here, you can choose how you'd like your Nandroid to be labeled. The default option of UTC Timezone Name labels the file according to the date on which the backup was performed, and that is probably best for organizational purposes.

Choose a Backup TypeNext, and most importantly, you can set the format in which the backups will be stored. Since different custom recoveries use different formats to store their Nandroids, you'll need to tell the app which recovery you use first.By default, it's set to ClockworkMod, but if you use TWRP, you'll need to set that as your Backup Type.

Choose a Backup ModeAfter that, you can choose which partitions to back up with the Backup Mode option, but the default setting of Normal is probably best.

Choose a Save LocationWith the next entry, you can set the Save Location of your Nandroid backup file. Just make sure its set to a location that you can remember.

Choose a Backup RetentionThe Backup Retention option allows you to set how many backups you'd like to keep before older backups are overwritten in favor of newer ones.Remember, a Nandroid is a copy of your entire system, so these files can be a bit big. For this reason, I'd recommend setting this value to 1 or 2.

Save Your Chosen SettingsAfter that, there are a few options for minor cache and filetype configurations, but these values can be left alone on most setups. When you're done configuring these settings, be sure to hit the Save button at the top-right.

Step 3: Perform a Nandroid BackupWith all of your settings configured, using Online Nandroid Backup will be as easy as pie from here out.To make an exact copy of your system setup as it currently stands, just press Quick Backup from OLB's main screen. A confirmation dialog will appear, and on this screen, hit Start Backup. The backup process takes about the same amount of time as it would in custom recovery. Depending on your device and accumulated data, that could range anywhere from 10 minutes to half an hour. While your backup is being created, you can leave Online Nandroid Backup and go about your day. The app posts an ongoing notification while it's performing the backup, so it won't be cleared from memory by Android. Aside from the one-time setup, this is probably the easiest way to create Nandroids. And the easier it is, the more likely we'll all be to keep a current backup stored on our devices. What do you think? Will this make you more likely to save frequent Nandroid backups? Let us know in the comments section below.

How To: Make the Volume Buttons Control Ringtones & Notifications Again in Android Pie

How To: Make the Volume Buttons Control Ringtones & Notifications Again in Android Pie
As a longtime Android user, one of the changes I was most excited about with Android Pie was the fact that the volume rocker finally controls media volume by default. However, the new way isn't ideal for everyone, but thankfully, there's an app that can change it back. With this solution, you can return to the previous Android implementation where the volume rocker's default action is the volume of the ringer unless you're watching a video or listening to audio (whether music, podcast, etc.). However, what makes this solution even better is that it keeps the media controls nearby. Therefore, while your volume rocker will control the ringer, you are only one touch away from adjusting the media control.

Step 1: Get Button Mapper ProTo change the default volume control, you'll first need to remap the buttons. To accomplish this, the best solution we've found is an app called Button Mapper by flar2, AKA Aaron Segaert of ElementalX fame. Button Mapper doesn't require root, works with Android 9.0 Pie, and it's pretty straightforward to use. You can find the app in the Play Store using the link below.Install Button Mapper for free from the Google Play Store Thanks to our readers, we learned this feature now requires the pro version of Button Mapper. When this article was first published, the free version was able to accomplish this. However, as Mr. Segaert made clear in his comment below, the app was never meant to do that. Modifying the default action of the volume rocker has always been a part of the pro version. As such, you'll need to buy Button Mapper Pro for the reasonable starting price of $3.99.To do so, open the app and select any one of the options with a padlock next to it. A popup will appear telling you this is a "Pro feature." Select "Unlock" and choose any of the three amounts to unlock all the features, including modifying the volume rocker's default action. You can pay more to support the developer or pay the minimum at $3.99.

Step 2: Enable Button MapperWhen you first open Button Mapper, you will need to enable its Accessibility Service so that the app can detect when a button is activated. A banner along the bottom will appear with the button "Go" which will bring you to the correct page. Once at the Accessibility Service menu, select "Button Mapper" and enable the toggle. Once activated, return to Button Mapper's main page to begin remapping your buttons. Images by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

Step 3: Remap Your Volume ButtonsFrom Button Mapper's main menu, select "Volume Up," then enable the "Customize" toggle, which will make the rest of the options accessible. Choose "Single tap" and select Volume+ from the list. Head back to main page and select "Volume Down." Enable the "Customize" toggle and choose "Single tap." Choose Volume- from the list.

Step 4: Give Button Mapper DND PermissionWhile this isn't necessary to control the volume, we recommend giving the app Do Not Disturb permission. Once enabled, you quickly enable DND mode by pressing the volume down button when the volume is at zero. To achieve this, long press the volume down button until a toast message appears alongside a new page. This new page is where you permit apps to manage Do Not Disturb. Enable to the toggle next to Button Mapper. Images by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks

Step 5: Test Out Your New ButtonsNow that your buttons are reconfigured, it's time to test them out. Press either the volume up or down button and see the new volume sliders. Instead of the single slider for media controls, you will now see an additional slider for ringtone control, which the buttons now control by default. And thanks to the dual slider, you can control the media volume by sliding its controls up and down using the touchscreen. (1) Before, (2) After As with most components of Android, you have a choice. With such a robust collection of apps in the Play Store, more times than not, there is a workaround to software changes, allowing you to customize the experience to your liking. With Button Mapper, whether you are a fan of Pie's change to the volume rocker's default action or not, you have the ability to customize it to your preferred style.Don't Miss: Get Android Pie's Quick Settings & Notification Shade on Any Phone — No Root NeededFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Download & Install iOS 13 on Your iPhone Right Now
Apple showed off iOS 13 at WWDC 2019, its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. We saw a suite of exciting new features, including a system-wide dark mode for the first time. While Apple confirmed the public release of its latest mobile OS won't be available until the fall, you don't need to wait until then. In fact, you can get your hands on iOS 13 right now. There's no hacking or illegal downloading that's required to gain early access to iOS 13. Instead, all we're doing here is jumping on board the beta program for the software. Apple invites beta testers to download and use pre-release iOS versions ahead of time, in order to find any bugs or issues that may be present. It's a win-win — Apple gets a large safety net to catch these problems, while the public has its chance to try out new features before an official release.Don't Miss: 100+ Exciting New iOS 13 Features for iPhone There is a small catch here. At first, the iOS 13 beta is only available to developers. Apple releases the developer beta first for two reasons. One, so devs can get to work optimizing their apps for the new software immediately, and two, to avoid any major bugs or issues going out to the much larger public beta tester community. The public beta version won't be available until July sometime.Speaking of issues, we strongly recommend you complete an archived backup of your iPhone before jumping on the beta. Beta programs, by nature, are unstable. Should something go wrong, you could lose every byte of data on your iOS device.
Compatible DevicesWhile iOS 13 is certainly an exciting step for Apple devices, it comes with some sad goodbyes. The iPhone 5s, 6, 6 Plus, iPad Air, Air 2, and mini 2 will remain on iOS 12.3.1. or 12.4 for the rest of their life cycles. It was a good run and, for many of those devices, a record-breaking run at that. However, iOS 13 split iPad off into its own OS, called iPadOS 13, and supported devices for iPadOS 13 include all iPad Pro models, iPad mini 4 and 5th generation, iPad Air 2 and 3rd generation, and iPad 5th and 6th generation. As for iOS 13, the iPod touch 7th generation can use it, as well as all of the following iPhone models:iPhone 6s iPhone 6s Plus iPhone SE iPhone 7 iPhone 7 Plus iPhone 8 iPhone 8 Plus iPhone X iPhone Xs iPhone Xs Max iPhone XR These instructions assume that you're updating your iPhone to iOS 13, but consider each step the same whether updating an iPad or iPod touch as well. Apple is not releasing generic IPSW versions of each file above (at least, no one has found them yet), only ones tied to developer accounts, so you can use the links above which come from Betaprofiles.com. It's a trusted site but proceed at your own risk. If you have access to the Apple Developer portal, get them from there instead.

Archive an iOS BackupIt can be tempting to just jump right into beta testing, but if something goes wrong while beta testing iOS 13, and you want to head back to iOS 12.4 or iOS 12.3.1, you will lose all of your data without a proper backup. Even if you let iCloud automatically back up your device, it will only have a backup for the iOS 13 beta. Reverting a previous version of iOS, therefore, will result in the total annihilation of any data tied to that backup on your iPhone. You can choose to back up your iPhone running a public version of iOS with either iCloud or iTunes. However, we suggest you use iTunes in macOS Mojave or Finder in macOS Catalina so you can archive the backup. Archiving simply prevents macOS from overwriting your backup the next time you sync your iPhone.More Info: How to Back Up & Restore Your iPhone Without iTunes In Mojave, after completing a backup with iTunes, select "iTunes" in the menu bar, then "Preferences," then the "Devices" tab. Find your backup from the list, then right-click on it. Select "Archive" to do just that. Now, whenever your iPhone running iOS 13 backs up, iTunes save it as a separate file. Your archived backup will remain as it was the day you backed it up, ready to download to your iPhone should you need it. In Catalina, the process is similar, but you open up Finder and select your iPhone from the sidebar. Then, instead of going in any preferences menu, click the "Manage Backups" button. Next, right-click your last backup and hit "Archive." Make sure to use the encrypted backup option if you want to carry on Health and Activity data. You should note that this method only works while Apple still signs iOS 12.3.1 or 12.4, which won't be until the fall. Once Apple decides to stop supporting these versions, your archived backup may not work anymore. The only way around this certainty is to back up your SHSH2 blobs. Backing up your iPhone this way is a bit more complicated, but it ensures your archived backup can withstand the sands of time. This is a common method for jailbreakers to use.More Info: Save Your iPhone's SHSH2 Blobs So You Can Downgrade iOS Later
How to Install the iOS 13 Developer Beta (Mojave Method)Right now, there is no configuration profile for iOS 13, so you have to use the restore images to install iOS 13 on your iPhone. In order to install the IPSW restore file for your iPhone model, you will either have to install Xcode 11 beta on the latest release version of macOS 10.14 Mojave or just use macOS 10.15 Catalina beta. For the latter, skip to the next section. For the Mojave method, using the following instructions. However, note that you can skip downloading Xcode itself, which is over 7 GB, and just install the mobiledevice.pkg from Xcode instead, which should also do the trick. It's a resource package hidden within Xcode's contents, and it's all you need to install iOS 13 in Mojave. If you do that, open up the package and install it, then skip all Xcode-related steps below.Register your iPhone's UDID with your dev account, if not done so already. Visit developer.apple.com/download and sign in to your Developer account. If you have two-factor authentication enabled on your account, following the verification instructions. Under the iOS 13 section, choose "View all." Download the IPSW file for the appropriate model iPhone. Still in the "Downloads" webpage, select the "Applications" tab and download "Xcode 11 beta." Xcode is a huge file, so it will take some time to download. Unpack the Xcode XIP file, which may take some time. Afterward, you will have Xcode installed. Open up the Xcode 11 beta app and follow the on-screen instructions to install any additional tools needed. Make sure you have the newest iTunes version on your computer. On macOS, you can check via the "Update" tab in the Mac App Store. For Windows, use "Check for Updates" in the "Help" menu in iTunes; If that isn't there, you can check for updates from the Microsoft Store. However, Xcode is not available for Windows so PC users are left out this time, so you can stop right here if that's you. Connect your iPhone to the computer with your Lightning to USB cable or Lightning to USB-C cable. If you see an "Unlock iPhone to Use Accessories" notification appear on your iPhone, unlock your iPhone using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to proceed. Tap "Trust This Computer" if prompted on your iPhone, and follow the on-screen steps to trust it. You can always untrust the computer later if need be later. Open iTunes if it's not already opened. If not already logged in, sign in to your Apple account in iTunes. Select the iPhone in iTunes and make sure you're in the "Summary" tab. Back up and archive it for safe-keeping, if not already done. Make sure to use the encrypted backup option if you want to carry on Health and Activity data. Hold down the Option key on Mac or Shift key on Windows, then click on "Update" or "Check for Update" in iTunes to initiate the process. (Note: Some users may have issues doing it this way, so try entering DFU mode on your iPhone instead, then hold the Option key and click on "Restore" when prompted in iTunes.) From the selection window in iTunes, choose the IPSW restore image that you downloaded to your computer. Then, select "Open" to begin the installation. Once iTunes finishes installing the image, your iPhone will restart. Now, all that's left to do is follow the instructions on your iPhone to activate and set up iOS 13. It's important to note that all iOS devices you wish to install the iOS 13 dev beta on need to be registered by adding their UDIDs to the dev site. If you want to try to get around this process, or you don't want to pay $99 for the developer's license, you can try using Betaprofiles.com to download the iOS 13 profile when it goes live. We can't guarantee this link will work, but it's a service that Redditors have found useful.

How to Install the iOS 13 Developer Beta (Catalina Method)If you've updated to the macOS 10.15 Catalina beta already, which you may have if you couldn't get the above Mojave method to work, the process is actually pretty easy. And since there's no iTunes anymore, all of the work is done right inside the Finder app, since iOS devices mount similar to external hard drives.Register your iPhone's UDID with your dev account, if not done so already. Visit developer.apple.com/download and sign in to your Developer account. If you have two-factor authentication enabled on your account, following the verification instructions. Under the iOS 13 section, choose "View all." Download the IPSW file for the appropriate model iPhone. Open Finder if it's not already opened. Select the name of your iPhone in the sidebar under Locations. Back up and archive your last iOS 12 version for safe-keeping, if not already done. Doing so is just like in iTunes, where you manually back up in the Finder window, but instead of going in any preferences menu, click the "Manage Backups" button. Next, right-click your last backup and hit "Archive." Make sure to use the encrypted backup option if you want to carry on Health and Activity data. Hold down the Option key then click on "Check for Update" in Finder to initiate the process. From the selection window in iTunes, choose the IPSW restore image that you downloaded to your computer, then click on "Open." Click on "Update" when prompted to let your Mac contact Apple to verify and install iOS 13. During the install, you will have to enter the passcode on your iPhone. Once Finder finishes installing the image, your iPhone will restart. Now, all that's left to do is follow the instructions on your iPhone to activate and set up iOS 13. It may already be ready to go, though, so no additional setup may be necessary.
How to Install the iOS 13 Public BetaThe iOS 13 public beta isn't out yet, but that doesn't mean you can't prepare. If you're coming from the iOS 12 public beta, you can simply sign in instead of signing up for the beta. The public beta will not be available until sometime in July.Archived your backup via iTunes, if you haven't done so already. On your iPhone, head to beta.apple.com. Tap the "Sign Up" or "Sign In" option. Enter your Apple ID and password to log in. Read and accept the Apple Beta Software Agreement. Head to beta.apple.com/profile to enroll your iPhone in the beta program. Tap the "Download profile" link halfway down this page. Tap "Allow" on the pop-up to view the configuration profile. Tap "Install" when you see the iOS 13 Beta Software Profile. Enter your iPhone's passcode. Tap "Install" on the Consent form, then "Install" on the following pop-up. Restart your iPhone. Once powered on, head to Settings –> General –> Software Update. Select "Download and Install," then finish installing the iOS 13 beta like you would any other iOS update.
Enjoy iOS 13 on Your iPhoneCongratulations! You're running iOS 13 months before the general public ever will. Make sure to let us and Apple know about any bugs or issues you run into while beta testing. News: Why EIS Is Actually Better Than OIS for Videos

News: Why EIS Is Actually Better Than OIS for Videos

If cameras are a priority, one of the first specs to check on a new phone is the image stabilization. You've probably been told optical image stabilization (OIS) reigns supreme, but this isn't the case if you're taking a lot of videos. Instead, we would argue, electronic image stabilization (EIS) actually works better for video. While OIS is superior when it comes to still photos, the same can't be said for videos. Videographers will benefit from OIS, true, but EIS actually does a better job with moving pictures in sequence. Both stabilization methods help to minimize any shaking of the camera body, but because of the way they each work, EIS is a better choice for videos.

How OIS WorksIn phones, OIS works by suspending the lens over the camera module using springs and electromagnets. The phone detects the frequency and amplitude of any shaking, then uses the electromagnets to match it and adjust the angle of the lens. The lens moves in the opposite direction of the shake, allowing the image to re-center itself on the image sensor. All this occurs before the image hits the image sensor, which means there is no image degradation. OIS uses your phone's gyroscopic sensors to assist in detecting shake. The gyro-sensors measure movements and send this data to a "microcenter," which then moves the lens to offset the motion. OIS in action in the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. Image by Inam Ghafoor/YouTube In short, OIS mechanically moves the image sensor in response to any shaking detected in your phone. This physical movement, however, takes time, which is a valuable commodity in high frame rate videography. Another downside to OIS when it comes to video is the movement of the lens in respect to the image sensor can result in warped perspective, which comes across as a "jello effect" in videos.

How EIS WorksElectronic Image Stabilization is different. The system still detects camera shake using its sensors, but adjustments are made when the image hits the image sensor. This is accomplished by zooming the image until it's larger than the image sensor and scanning within the image for any movement, which is then countered by moving the image in the opposite direction. However, this method will reduce video quality and resolution because of the zooming. EIS works similarly to using the Scale and Perspective tools to re-center an image in Photoshop. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks Another method is to use an oversized image sensor where the image only uses about 90% of the chip's area. The additional 10% of space is then used to recenter the image without any "cropping."

What Makes EIS Better?Because the lens doesn't move with EIS, the process of capturing each frame in your video is never slowed down by mechanical parts. EIS only need to adjust the image, resulting in a much smoother video.Additionally, EIS systems have the ability to predict the shift of the next frame, making a huge difference in the quality of the video. While moving, the camera is determining the direction you are moving, and if it determines you're moving in a single direction (such as you panning the camera across an object), it can adjust the next shift accordingly. This allows for a much smoother video. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks According to Google, when the Pixel's team had to decide between OIS versus EIS for the first Pixel, they agreed on EIS because of its video performance. According to Google's camera product lead, Isaac Reynolds:"EIS and OIS have very different goals, so you can't compare them to ask which is better/worse. OIS primarily improves low light photography by physically compensating for hand shake within each single frame, and EIS improves shaky video by maintaining a consistent framing between multiple video frames. OIS is primarily for photo, and EIS is only for video."
— Isaac ReynoldsWhile Google did add OIS in the Pixel 2, it was able to achieve fantastic stabilization with just EIS on the original Pixel thanks in part to their algorithms. This leads to another advantage of EIS, its ability to get better over time with software updates. Since algorithms are what determine how the system compensates for specific movements, as OEMs capture more data, they can improve the feature. This article was produced during Gadget Hacks' special coverage on smartphone-based video creator tips for filming and editing. How To: Activate Your iPhone's Hidden Magnifying Glass for Extreme Zooming

How To: Activate Your iPhone's Hidden Magnifying Glass for Extreme Zooming
When you want to see something far away with a little more clarity or you're having a hard time reading small letters right in front of you, you can point your iPhone's camera at the subject and "pinch" to zoom for a better look. But there's actually something built into iOS for the exact purpose of magnifying objects, and it goes above and beyond the normal camera features. The built-in "Magnifier" tool first became available in iOS 10 as an Accessibility option, and it's available to use on iOS 11 and iOS 12 too, as well as for the foreseeable future. While your camera will let you zoom into objects, the Magnifier will mega-zoom into those same objects for a more granular view.

Step 1: Enable MagnifierYou can enable it by going into the Settings app, then choosing "General," then "Accessibility." Next, under Vision, select "Magnifier," then toggle it on.

Step 2: Triple-Click to OpenIf you're not using Guided Access or the Accessibility Shortcut option for quick access to things like Smart Invert (for a kind of dark mode), Color Filters (for red screens and more), or AssistiveTouch (for many useful tools), you can use the triple-click Home or Side button shortcut to jump right into Magnifier. For those of you who are using the Accessibility Shortcut for other things, whenever you triple-click the Home or Side button, depending on your iPhone model, a menu will pop up asking you to select which shortcut to use, so pick "Magnifier." (Note that, like Guided Access, you can't disable the Magnifier from the Accessibility Shortcut settings, only from the tool's main toggle.)Don't Miss: How to Set Up & Open Accessibility Shortcuts on Your iPhone

Step 3: Zoom with the SliderTo zoom in Magnifier, either move the circle in the slider left or right or slide your finger up or down on the screen. As you can see below, Magnifier can zoom in much farther than the stock Camera app can. Even when an iPhone has a telephoto lens, the max zoom is very similar to iPhones with only a wide-angle lens because Magnifier uses the regular wide-angle lens since it can focus better at closer ranges. Max zoom in Magnifier (left) compared to max zoom in Camera (right) on an iPhone XS Max. On Amazon: Physical Magnifiers That Don't Need a Smartphone

Step 4: Use Flash, AE Lock & FiltersBesides zooming, there are plenty of different options to choose from to help you see what you're looking at better. You can press the lightning bolt icon to turn on the flash (which will stay on until you turn it off or exit the Magnifier app), lock and unlock exposure by tapping on the focal point or the lock icon, and adjust brightness and contrast by hitting the filter icon. Don't Miss: This Bug Lets You Bypass Zoom Restrictions on Your iPhone Photos In the filters options, you can choose no filter, white/blue, yellow/blue, grayscale, yellow/black, or red black. You can also tap the inverted icon in the bottom left for inverted, blue/white, blue/yellow, inverted grayscale, black/yellow, or black red views. No matter which filter you choose, you can use the sliders to adjust brightness (top slider) and contrast (bottom slider).

Step 5: Take a Still ImageOnce you have it how you want it, you can press the shutter button to take a photo. The resulting static image will fill the entire screen, and you can tap the preview image to bring up the zoom controls again, which work even on this still image preview. The shutter button's outer circle will be highlighted yellow, indicating it's not in camera mode but in viewing mode. After you "take" a photo to view, it won't go to your Photos app and will only reside in the Magnifier app until you press the shutter icon again, in which case you start over. However, you can take screenshots which you can access later just like any other screenshot.Don't Miss: 18 Tips for Using Your iPhone's New Screenshot Tool

Comparison ResultsThe results of how clear an image is, as well as colors, will vary depending on which type of iPhone you have. For instance, you can see the iPhone XS Max below looks slightly blurred compared to the iPhone X, and that could be because of how Apple's newer models "beautify" faces and such with smooth edges. iPhone XS Max (left) vs. iPhone X (right), fully zoomed. In a side-by-side comparison of the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 6 Plus, you can see that the iPhone 7 Plus definitely has a sharper image, though it doesn't seem to zoom in quite as much as the iPhone 6 Plus did — which is probably a good thing, to prevent too many details being lost. iPhone 7 Plus (left) vs. iPhone 6 Plus (right), fully zoomed. How To: Mirror & Control Your Android's Screen on Your Windows PC
When you're sitting at your desk trying to get some work done, your Android device can be a big distraction. If a text comes in, you have to pick up your phone, unlock it, then respond with the clumsy touch screen keyboard—and by then, you've probably forgotten what you were doing on your computer. Thanks to an app from developer cafehouse, these issues are now a thing of the past. Instead of all that juggling, when you plug your phone into your Windows PC, you'll be able to control every aspect of Android's UI with a dedicated window that mirrors your phone's display. It even accepts mouse and keyboard input, so now, your phone and computer will be more integrated than ever.Don't Miss: How to Use Your Android as a Microphone for Your Windows PC

Step 3: Install ApowerMirror on Your PCOver on your PC now, download the ApowerMirror companion app for Windows. Once you've got the installer file downloaded, simply launch it and follow the prompts to get the software installed.Download the ApowerMirror companion app for Windows Immediately after installation, you'll be asked if you'd like to purchase the pro version of ApowerMirror. This is not required for the app's main functionality, so you can click "Trial" to continue with the free version. Finally, you'll be prompted to connect your phone to your computer with a USB data cable, so do just that.

Step 4: Enable Notification Mirroring (Optional)At this point, you'll get a chance to enable notification mirroring, which is a feature that displays your Android notifications right on your Windows desktop. If you'd like to turn this on, click the "Enable now" option when prompted. From there, enable the switch next to the ApowerMirror option, then hit "Allow" on the subsequent popup.

Step 5: Control Your Phone from Your PCAt this point, you'll see ApowerMirror's main interface, which is a phone-shaped window that displays a live feed of your Android's screen. In other words, you can fully control your Android device using the mouse and keyboard on your Windows computer. There's a menu bar on the side of this window that lets you quickly take screenshots or record your screen. And if you open an app that launches in landscape mode, the Windows interface will rotate accordingly. How To: Remove Pictures from the Main Feed in Google Photos Without Deleting Them
Google Photos just got a killer new feature that everyone should know about. Instead of one endless stream of every picture you've ever uploaded, there's now an "Archive" section where you can stash select shots. What this means is you can now remove pictures from your primary feed and put them in into a separate area for safe keeping. Then, when you're showing your main gallery to friends or family, these archived pics will be hidden away — though you'll still be able to view them whenever you want. It's a great way to deal with duplicate photos, private pics, or the type of shots that are worth keeping even if they aren't awesome enough to show off. And once you've used the new feature, your main photo feed will be a lot tidier. Best of all, it's available for both iOS and Android, so if you like what you're reading so far, we'll give you a quick tour of the new feature below.Don't Miss: Rooters Beware, Google Will Soon Start Locking You Out of Apps

Declutter Your Main Feed by Archiving PhotosTo get started, make sure you're running the latest version of the Google Photos app for Android or iOS. From there, head to the side navigation menu in Google Photos by tapping the three-line hamburger icon to the left of the search bar, then select "Archive" to tour the new section. Next, tap the icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. You can now choose which photos you want to hide from your main feed, so tap on the images to select them, then hit the "Done" button when you're finished. At this point, photos you selected will no longer appear in the main feed when you open the Google Photos app, but you can still find them later by heading to the Archive menu again. If your archived photos were previously part of an album, they will still remain in the album. On top of that, you can also find archived pictures through Google Photos' search feature. So for those who have pictures of the less innocent variety, archiving them won't keep them completely safe from prying eyes, but it'll at least remove unwanted items from your main Google Photos feed.Has this new feature brought some long overdue organization to your Google Photos feed? News: 23 Important Apps That Work Great on Both Android & iOS
Brand loyalty is one of the main factors behind our decision to choose a particular mobile device, but it doesn't have to be the entire equation. Educated consumers know that certain devices simply fit their budget and usage better than others, which means you can't always let a logo dictate what kind of phone or tablet you buy.Don't Miss: How to Use an Android Wear Smartwatch with an iPhone Don't Miss: Apps You'll Need When Switching from iPhone to Android For these reasons, a lot of us have multiple mobile devices with mismatched manufacturers, and in today's market, that means we're splitting time between iOS and Android. The struggle then becomes finding apps that sync between an iPhone and a Samsung tablet, for instance—but as uncommon as that may sound, there are actually quite a few apps that let you seamlessly switch between iOS and Android.
Messaging AppsMost messaging apps are internet-based, which means they only need a data connection to sync your conversations between devices. These first three apps play nice on iOS or Android, so it shouldn't take much convincing to get your friends to use them.

1. WhatsAppIf you're looking for an app that lets you message friends and family on both Android and iOS, the first thing you should consider is the app's user base. WhatsApp has more users than almost anybody, and considering that you get all of the bells and whistles that you could ask for in a messaging app while being able to pick up where you left off, it's almost a no-brainer.Install WhatsApp for Android from the Google Play Store Install WhatsApp for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) WhatsApp on Android, (2) WhatsApp on iOS

2. Facebook MessengerPerhaps the only messaging app that can rival WhatsApp in terms of user base is Facebook Messenger. Chances are, you already have a Facebook account, which means you can message all of your friends with this Android or iOS app, and a rich set of features makes the app even more fun to use.Install Facebook Messenger for Android from the Google Play Store Install Facebook Messenger for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Facebook Messenger on Android, (2) Facebook Messenger on iOS

3. HangoutsHangouts doesn't have quite as big of a user base as the last two options, but the app comes pre-installed on most Android devices, which make up over 80% of the mobile market. On top of iOS and Android support, Hangouts works in Gmail, on the web, and through a Chrome extension for Windows, Mac, and Linux—so it's one of the most widely-available messaging apps out there.Install Hangouts for Android from the Google Play Store Install Hangouts for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Hangouts on Android, (2) Hangouts on iOS
Cloud Storage AppsIf you want to access your files on different devices, a cloud storage service is the way to go. These apps will allow you to upload content to their servers, then give you an easy way to download said content to any device where you're signed in with the same account.

4. Google DriveGoogle Drive has been one of the most advanced cloud storage services for years, mainly due to the fact that it includes cloud computing. This means that if you need to make changes to a file, you don't have to download, edit, then re-upload—you can simply make the changes while the file is still on Google's servers, so each of your devices will always have access to the latest version of a file.Install Google Drive for Android from the Google Play Store Install Google Drive for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Google Drive on Android, (2) Google Drive on iOS

5. OneDriveMicrosoft's has recently invested a lot of time and money into their cloud storage service, starting with a rebrand from SkyDrive to OneDrive. The service now integrates seamlessly with an Office 365 subscription, so if you're a heavy Word or Excel user, any files you create will instantly be available on iOS or Android.Install OneDrive for Android from the Google Play Store Install OneDrive for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) OneDrive on Android, (2) OneDrive on iOS

6. DropboxIf you'd rather just have your cloud storage service function as an internet-based hard drive, Dropbox offers a nice and simple interface that's incredibly easy to use. You can upload files from Android, iOS, Windows, or Mac, then simply download the same files on any of your devices.Install Dropbox for Android from the Google Play Store Install Dropbox for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Dropbox on Android, (2) Dropbox on iOS
Photos AppsAlmost every mobile device these days includes a camera for taking quick shots, which is definitely a nice luxury. But this can become problematic when you end up with pictures scattered across all of your devices, so you'll need a good photo syncing app to keep things organized.

7. Google PhotosCross-platform or not, Google Photos is one of the best photo apps out there. The app will automatically back up your photos to the cloud, which means they can be accessed on any device shortly after you take them. Factoring in the unlimited free storage and a powerful search feature that lets you find pictures that feature almost any subject, Google Photos is almost a must-have app.Install Google Photos for Android from the Google Play Store Install Google Photos for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Google Photos on Android, (2) Google Photos on iOS

8. Amazon PhotosWhile Google Photos offers unlimited storage, there are some caveats. So if you'd prefer to store your pictures without compression or resolution caps, you might want to try Amazon Photos. The app has automatic backup features and your photos can also be accessed on Windows or the web, but an Amazon Prime subscription is required.Install Amazon Photos for Android from the Google Play Store Install Amazon Photos for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Amazon Photos on Android, (2) Amazon Photos on iOS
To-Do List & Note-Taking AppsWhen a thought randomly crosses your mind, having a place to quickly jot it down is essential—which means you need an app that works on the nearest device regardless of its operating system. The same goes for making to-do lists, since you don't want to be limited to one device when you're checking off tasks and items.

9. WunderlistWunderlist makes to-do lists incredibly simple, and it does it with a beautiful interface. You can instantly access lists and notes on any phone, tablet, or computer, and your progress is synced as well. To top it all off, lists can be shared, so collaborating with family and friends is a seamless experience.Install Wunderlist for Android from the Google Play Store Install Wunderlist for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Wunderlist on Android, (2) Wunderlist on iOS

10. Google KeepGoogle Keep is like the Swiss Army Knife of this category of apps. You can use the app to make notes and reminders, create to-do lists, draw, record audio clips, or even save photos—and all of these creations can be shared for collaborating with other users.Install Google Keep for Android from the Google Play Store Install Google Keep for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Google Keep on Android, (2) Google Keep on iOS

11. EvernoteIf you're looking for a non-Google app with a boatload of features, Evernote is the way to go. Notes and to-do lists are the central functions, but additional features like offline website saving, easy collaboration, and the ability to upload documents as attachments make it a one-stop shop.Install Evernote for Android from the Google Play Store Install Evernote for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Evernote on Android, (2) Evernote on iOS
Calendar AppsKeeping track of your daily schedule is an ongoing task, but a good calendar app can make it far less tedious. A lot of calendar apps store your schedule locally, but these next two apps sync with some of the best online calendar services, which means you can view your agenda on any device.

12. Google CalendarThe Google Calendar app recently got a big update on Android and iOS, and the improvements are more than just aesthetic. A new "Schedule View" is probably the biggest difference maker, as it focuses on your upcoming agenda instead of a traditional calendar layout. The calendar service itself is still one of the most commonly-used, which brings the added bonus of compatibility with many third-party calendar sources.Install Google Calendar for Android from the Google Play Store Install Google Calendar for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Google Calendar on Android, (2) Google Calendar on iOS

13. Sunrise CalendarIf you're already using an online calendar service and don't feel like making the switch to Google Calendar, then Sunrise Calendar is your best option. After recently being purchased by Microsoft, the app now syncs with Outlook, iCloud, and even Google Calendar, so most popular services are covered.Install Sunrise Calendar for Android from the Google Play Store Install Sunrise Calendar for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Sunrise Calendar on Android, (2) Sunrise Calendar on iOS
Document AppsIt's true that typing on a mobile device isn't quite as easy as using a full-sized desktop keyboard, but sometimes, you just need to get things done on the go. When it comes to creating and editing documents on iOS or Android, these next two apps are your best bets.

14. Microsoft WordMicrosoft makes its money by having Windows installed on nearly every school and office computer around the world, so most of us are already familiar with Microsoft Word. The mobile app offers almost every feature you could need, and with OneDrive document sync, you can freely switch between Android and iOS.Install Microsoft Word for Android from the Google Play Store Install Microsoft Word for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Microsoft Word on Android, (2) Microsoft Word on iOS

15. Google DocsWhen it comes to web based cross-platform document apps, Google Docs is the granddaddy of them all. Your documents are automatically saved to the cloud, so you can switch between devices to edit them on the fly. While it's not quite as ubiquitous as Microsoft Word, Google Docs is capable of saving documents in Microsoft's DOCX format, so the files you create can be used almost anywhere.Install Google Docs for Android from the Google Play Store Install Google Docs for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Google Docs on Android, (2) Google Docs on iOS
Music AppsWhether you'd prefer to play your own MP3s or you'd rather stream your music from an online radio station, it's important to find a cross-platform service so that you don't waste money on something that only works on one device.

16. SpotifySpotify is the most popular streaming music service, and for good reason. Spotify's premium service removes ads for $9.99 per month and comes with the ability to play any song, but free users can still access thousands of curated playlists. When you combine Spotify's native Android and iOS apps with the web-based player, that means you can access all of this music from any internet connected device.Install Spotify for Android from the Google Play Store Install Spotfiy for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Spotify on Android, (2) Spotify on iOS

17. Google Play MusicGoogle's streaming music service is my personal favorite, since it offers the best of both worlds. You get the curated playlists and online radio stations like Spotify, but you can also upload as many as 50,000 of your own MP3s that will stream to all of your devices. All of this is free in the ad-supported version, but for $9.99/month, ads are removed and you get access to YouTube Red as a bonus.Install Google Play Music for Android from the Google Play Store Install Google Play Music for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Google Play Music on Android, (2) Google Play Music on iOS

18. Apple MusicApple finally has an Android app, and it's a good one. A limited version is available for free, but for $9.99 per month, you get access to Apple's entire music catalog, as well as curated playlists and a live station called Beats 1. Apple Music is a default app on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch (iOS 9 or higher), so you'll only have to install it on your Android device to have access to your music everywhere.Install Apple Music for Android from the Google Play Store (1) Apple Music on Android, (2) Apple Music on iOS
News AppsThere are thousands—if not millions—of online news services, but only a fraction of these may fit your personal preferences. This is why it's important to have an app that can remember your favorite sources regardless of which device you're using.

19. News RepublicNews Republic caters to your interests by allowing you to choose the types of news you'd like to read, then presenting the latest headlines in a topic-based format. Once you've signed up for an account, these topics will follow you on any device, and the service gets better as you go since News Republic learns more about your preferences as you read.Install News Republic for Android from the Google Play Store Install News Republic for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) News Republic on Android, (2) News Republic on iOS

20. FlipboardFlipboard is functionally similar to News Republic, but with one major difference. Instead of using a paginated or scrolling view, Flipboard earns its name with an intuitive vertical flipping motion similar to turning a page in a book. The end result is a visually stunning experience, which is a joy to use on iOS or Android.Install Flipboard for Android from the Google Play Store Install Flipboard for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Flipboard on Android, (2) Flipboard on iOS
Podcast AppIf you'd prefer to have your news and current events come through your headphones, you'll need a good podcast app. Since you probably subscribe to quite a few podcasts, the best option is an app that can sync subscriptions across devices.

21. Pocket CastsThere's really only one cross-platform podcast app worth bothering with—but on the bright side, it's universally hailed as the best podcast app for both Android and iOS. Pocket Casts sports a clean interface with easy podcast discovery and sync, but the downside is that it's a paid app, which means you'll have to purchase Pocket Casts on both mobile platforms.Install Pocket Casts for Android from the Google Play Store Install Pocket Casts for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Pocket Casts for Android, (2) Pocket Casts for iOS
Internet Services AppsOf course you have a browser on both devices to view webpages, but it's easy to forget where you left off. These last two apps can help streamline your browsing experience by combining popular web services and making it all available on any device.

22. PocketIf you've ever come across an interesting article, but didn't have time to read it, then Pocket can be of great help. First, you install the Pocket browser extension for Chrome, Safari, or Firefox, then you simply click the Pocket icon when you come across an interesting website or article. From there, open Pocket on your mobile device, and you'll find all of the websites that you saved for later.Install Pocket for Android from the Google Play Store Install Pocket for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) Pocket on Android, (2) Pocket on iOS

23. If (Formerly IFTTT)Don't you wish all of your favorite web services would work together as well as these cross-platform apps? With IF, they finally will. The basic premise is if this, then that, and it works with hundreds of services—so you can make "recipes" like if I update my Facebook cover photo, then update my Twitter photo too. Since it mainly relies on internet services, most recipes should work seamlessly across Android and iOS.Install IF for Android from the Google Play Store Install IF for iOS from the iOS App Store (1) IF on Android, (2) IF on iOS Do you know of any awesome cross-platform apps for Android & iOS that aren't listed here?
